Memoirs from the gulagWe read of war and the devastation that it causes. But at times seeing the pictures we lose track of the devastation of individual lives. My mother lived a very priveleged life before the outbreak of World War II. However the invasion of Soviet forces from the East (liberation as Putin would still like to claim) liberated both my father's and mother's families of everything that they owned, and deported my mother to a work farm within spitting distance of the Chinese border. My mother wrote her memoirs of those times and my daughter translated them into English. |
