A note about all of my courses
The ONLY tangible entity that you gain from an education is what you can produce with your mind. Appropriating someone else's intellectual output as yours is the most flagrant travesty imaginable. Any act of violation of intellectual property rights -- this includes cheating and plagiarism -- will be cause for an immediate failing grade in a course. If I had the authority, it would be cause for dismissal from the

Mathematics Assessment Tool

ALL entering students are asked to take an assessment of their preparedness for college level mathematics. Whether you plan on taking a mathematics course this year or not, please visit the page
Mathematics Assessment
and complete this evaluation.
You can find out more about me here. Some people find my humor hard to understand, here is a sample. (Last updated 2009-01-03.) Since I do a lot of programming, I find value in words of wisdom of other programmers.

Rubik's Cube

The July 2008 issue of Scientific American has an interesting issue of some of the mathematics behind Rubik's Cube and other puzzles based on similar mathematics. There are a number of on-line references to related matters.

Top 200 Jobs

JobsRated.com offers help for uncertain job seekers by analyzing 200 different jobs according to 5 vital criteria: Stress, Work Environment, Physical Demands, Income and Outlook. In every area each job receives a specific score, and data is mined to provide the most detailed information possible -- for example, rather than listing average incomes, our rankings combine each job's mid-level salary with its outlook score, which eliminates data from employees making too much or too little to provide a more accurate result.
You may be surprised that mathematician is ranked as the number one job.

Mathematics Competition

On Saturday, 14 Nov 2009, Nyles Breecher, David Feshbach and Aaron Hardin took part in the North Central Section Mathematical Association of American Math Team Contest. Last year David placed in the top 12% in a national mathematics competition. These same students will be taking part in the Putnam Mathematics Competition in the first week of December.

If you like you can check out this year's problems. If you get frustrated I have also posted the solutions.

Items of Interest

Carol Anway, a Hamline alum and math/physics major,

is on the cover of the current Boeings Frontiers magazine. Since lightning strikes the average aircraft once a year, the occurrence needs to be an ordinary event. That's one of the major focus areas of Carol Anway, a physicist with Phantom Works, and her teammates in the electromagnetic effects group. One key tool used to test a part's ability to withstand lightning is a Marx generator, which makes a giant lightning bolt. Full Story ...

Russell Lopez of Boston University reports a link between playgrounds at elementary schools and math performance. Read more ...

Algebraic Topology

My first research field, and my first-love is algebraic topology. Bob Bruner has a nice description of this beautiful subject as well as many other links to pages on topology.

John Baez' Pages

John Baez is a physicist who also does research on catgegory theory and topology. His pages always have something interesting.

C++ Builder

This is a RAD tool for the development of GUI interfaces for C++ code, now in its 4th release. I am archiving a mailing list for CPB and will be adding other links for this system

SiteComp for Windows

I have been working on a CAD package for the civil engineering market for a number of years. The concept of the package is due to Richard Harrison but the algorithms used in the package and its implementation are mine. You can find a full description here.

On 25 December 2007 Richard Harrison and I were awarded a patent for the development of this package.

Some interesting WWW sites

Here are some WWW sites which I have found interesting and/or useful.
A philosophy of using Java to teach computer science at SUNY Oswego. (Old but still interesting.)
Ask a Mathematician is an interesting site with great questions and responses.
The Topology Atlas is a wonderful resource for news on topology.
Phil Ochs: His words are still relevant today, but is anyone listening.
Lessons on the history of computer science at the University of Regina in Canada.
arXiv is a repository of links to sources in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and related fields.
Eric W. Weisstein (at the University of Virginia) has put on line the CRC Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics which has great definitions and links to many many areas of mathematics.
Computer Science at Dartmouth College
Indiana University Computer Science Entry Point
The Math Archives has a really fine collection of Calculus Resources Online, among many other wonderful things.
With data on half a million students from 41 countries, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the largest, most comprehensive, and most rigorous international study of schools and students ever.
